Brian, you make some very salient points. Many a sophisticated product/application has quickly gone the way of the dinosaur because it required its users to have a Ph.D. in order to operate the thing.

I would agree that designers are very critical to the success of most start-ups; whether the product is web-based on not. If you target the masses, good design can only help and bad design can only hurt.

What I got from the business week article wasn't that "engineering isn't important" but that it's not the most important. To some degree that's true, in the sense that it's not critical for the app to be built by a high end developer to be functional, as that's not what people see when they use the app (assuming it meets basic competency levels). What they see and interact with on the front end is critical, while having the most optimized awesome backed code is less so, at least at first. You need both, but it's super important to get the design and usability right.

Hey Brian, I agree with you. Design is a critical competency at a web start up and all of your points are reasonable and valid. And, it's not one-size-fits-all, the market you're has a big impact on the relative importance of various disciplines.

You're also not saying engineering isn't important, which is what Dave was saying and I was objecting too.
